Alvenia Dian Chipps, 75, of Salem, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 16, 2026, at Salem Center, surrounded by the love of her family.
Born February 11, 1951, in Clarksburg, she was the daughter of the late Obarita Pearl Chipps Kennedy and Charles Jack Kennedy.
Alvenia was a woman defined by her deep love for family and her unwavering work ethic. She worked for several years at Dollar General, where her dedication and friendly spirit were known to many. She believed in hard work, taking pride in providing for those she loved and always putting family first.
Her greatest joy in life was her family. For 56 years, she shared a devoted marriage with her beloved husband, David Lee Chipps, whom she married on November 6, 1969. Together they built a life centered on love, strength, and commitment. Alvenia treasured every moment spent with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether gathered around the dinner table, celebrating holidays, or simply enjoying each other’s company, she made sure her family always felt loved and cared for.
She found happiness in the simple pleasures of life—collecting dolls, peacocks, and old money, tending to her flowers, and cooking meals that brought everyone together. Her home was a place of comfort, warmth, and welcome.
Alvenia is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, David Lee Chipps; seven children, Obarita Dawn Ray of Salem, Kelly Ann Hayhurst of Bay City, MI, Tammy Lee Ford of Salem, David Lee Chipps Jr. (Tonya) of Salem, and Clyde Harley Chipps (Sheila) of Asheboro, NC; Anthony David Chipps (Monicia) of Ramseur, NC, and David Jonathan Michael Chipps of Salem.
She also leaves behind eleven cherished grandchildren: Aften Ray, Robert Ray, Shalanda Ray, Paisley Ray, Whitney Chipps, Brittney Delaney (Ray), Brandy Miller, Amanda Thorton (Jordan), John Blind, Aubree Ford, David Chipps, and Christinia Rice; twenty-three great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition, she is survived by two siblings, Eddie Ray (Betty) of Salem and Karla Davis (Michael) of West Union, along with numerous nieces and nephews who will lovingly remember her.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two grandchildren, Shelby Chipps and Clyde Chipps Jr.; two siblings, John Chipps and Charles Jack Kennedy; and her son-in-law, Marvin Ford.
Honoring her wishes, Alvenia will be cremated.
Her legacy is one of love, strength, and devotion — a woman who worked hard, loved fiercely, and gave her whole heart to her family. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
