Betty Lee Hayes, 79, of Route 5, Salem departed this life on Tuesday, March 29, 2011. She was born on November 27, 1931 a daughter of the late Okey B. and Romanzie Spencer Swiger. On October 2, 2006, she was preceded in death by her husband Thomas Jack Hayes.
Surviving are two daughters, Diana G. Randolph and husband Randall, Salem, Melody A. Pritt and husband Rich, Spelter, two sons, Jackson L. Hayes and wife Jean, Middlebourne, Chad J. Hayes and wife Patty, Stuarts Draft, VA, eight grandchildren, Jackson L. Hayes II, Jonathan Hayes, Jeremy Randolph, Stacy Pluchinsky, Garrett Hayes, Zachary Pritt, Tabatha Hayes, Brittany Pritt and nine great grandchildren. Three brothers, Dewayne Swiger, Blaine Swiger, Thurman Swiger, six sisters, Ruby McKeown, Doris James, Thelma Ford, Audra Hyde, Clara Ford and Ruth James preceded her in death.
Mrs. Hayes was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church, a former member of the Ladies Aux., Sperry Davis Post 9151 VFW Salem. She enjoyed making crafts, camping, and preparing apples to make apple butter at the Salem Apple Butter Festival. Betty was a loving mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
Funeral services will be held in the Harbert Funeral Home, 287 W. Main St., Salem on Saturday, April 2, 2011 at 11:00AM with Pastor Kevin Bender and Pastor Lester Stinebiser presiding. Interment will follow in the K of P Memorial Park, Salem. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Friday, April 1, 2011 from 2-4 & 6-8 PM.
