Cheryl Ann Chicknell, 63, of Salem, passed away peacefully at United Hospital Center on Saturday, April 11, 2026, surrounded by the quiet comfort of those who loved her.
Born on January 16, 1963, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, Cheryl was the beloved daughter of the late Fred Allen Childers and Faye “Arlene” Postlewait Childers.
Cheryl’s life was a testament to love, strength, and resilience. She leaves behind her four children, who were the center of her world: Elaina Chicknell of Shinnston, Angela Shuman of Clarksburg, Krista Chicknell of Morgantown, and Zachary Chicknell of Salem. She was a proud and devoted grandmother to Rebecca, Madison, and Caitlin, and a cherished great-grandmother to little Josie. Cheryl is also survived by her loving sister, Susan Darlene Gonzales, and her husband David of Clarksburg; and her Australian Shepherd, Buddy.
In addition to her parents, Cheryl was preceded in death by her husband, Douglas Allen “Doug” Chicknell, as well as her two brothers, Robert Edwin Childers and Fred “Chuck” Childers.
Cheryl found joy in life’s simple and beautiful moments, tending to her garden, listening to music, cooking for those she loved, collecting driftwood, hiking, and dreaming of the ocean. She was a caring and strong-willed woman, known for her wit, honesty, insight, and deep thoughtfulness. Her presence was steady, her love unwavering, and her spirit unforgettable.
Honoring her wishes, Cheryl will be cremated, and a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date to remember and honor the incredible woman she was. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to her CareFund on her funeral page.
