Clarence K. Nutter, 84, of Salem, stepped into Heaven from his home Friday, March 22, 2013. He had been in declining health for several years suffering from debilitating injuries.
Known to his family and friends as Nuttie, he was born February 12, 1929, in Clarksburg, the son of the late Jasper E. and Stella (McKeown) Nutter.
He is survived by his wife, Carolyn Hickman Nutter who he married September 13, 1953. Together they enjoyed 59 years of marriage and he will be remembered as a loving and devoted husband.
He is also survived by his nieces, Belle Marie (Larry) Stout, Sherry (Ronnie) Swann, Vicki (Steve) Shafer, Jo Donna Burdoff, and Joan Nutter, and nephews, Jack, James, Edward Lynn (Linda), David Lee, James Robert (Charlene) and John Jacob Nutter, Jack Gain and Jeffrey Hayes.
The last surviving member of his family, he was preceded by his sisters, twins, Janice and Bernice Nutter, Mary Ellen Barnes and Rosalyn Hayes and brothers, Jack, James and twins, Gail and Hale.
His work history, began at the age of 10, when he was a newsboy on the streets of Clarksburg. When the family moved to Salem, while still in school, he worked summers at the McBride Glass Factory. It was there he became interested in the art of glassmaking and apprenticed as a footsetter.
Following in the footsteps of his father, he joined the Army Infantry. He served two tours of duty in Korea, the first in Garrison Duty on the 32nd parallel and the second in Combat receiving several awards for his service and valor.
After he returned from the service, he again worked in the glassmaking industry at the Hazel-Atlas Company, retiring from Brockway Glass. In his retirement, he enjoyed gardening, growing many vegetables which he generously shared with others.
He was a member of the Bristol United Methodist Church where he attended faithfully, sang in the choir and served on the Board of Trustees, currently as the Chairman.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 9151 where he had been a trustee, and the disabled American Veterans, West Virginia Chapter 14.
In his younger years, he enjoyed participating in basketball, football and swimming. He was a great fan of WVU football and basketball and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He loved watching sports and visiting with shut-ins.
Clarence was a compassionate, kind, hard working person, and generous to a fault. His memory will continue to be cherished by those who were blessed to know him.
