Donna K. Race

Donna K. Race, 84, of West Union, passed away on Wednesday, February 25, 2026.  She was born on July 8, 1941 in Cleveland, Ohio, a daughter of the late William Robert and Betty Cartee Nearwood Zilmer.

She was preceded in death by her husband Frank Wald Race, Jr. who passed away on April 14, 2021.  They were united in marriage on July 20, 1985.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by one son Scott Keith David.

She had a deep love for photographing the birds and plants of West Virginia, finding joy in the quiet beauty of nature. Through her website, she generously shared the images she captured, allowing others to see the world through her thoughtful and artistic eye. She had a special gift for noticing life’s small wonders and preserving them in a way that made others pause and appreciate them too.

She worked at a bookstore, a place she truly cherished. Surrounded by stories and the comforting scent of books, she found happiness in helping others discover new adventures between the pages. It was more than a job to her — it was a place where her warm spirit and love of learning naturally shined. She was also very skilled with computers, always quick to understand new technology and patient when helping others navigate it.

Her love for animals was boundless. She cared deeply for every creature, great and small, and her gentle heart reflected that compassion in all areas of her life. She was intelligent, kind, and deeply loving, with a wonderful sense of humor that could light up a room and bring comfort even in difficult moments. Her laughter and quick wit were gifts to everyone who knew her.

In her later years, she was lovingly cared for by Dave, a dear friend of her late husband. His devotion never wavered. With steady kindness, loyalty, and compassion, he stood by her side and ensured she was cared for with dignity and love. His unwavering presence was a testament to the deep bonds of friendship and the goodness that surrounds a life well lived.

She leaves behind a legacy of warmth, curiosity, compassion, and quiet strength, a life that touched many and will be remembered always.
