Edith Louise Hurst, 84, of Salem passed away on Thursday, November 9, 2023 at Bridgeport Healthcare Center. She was born June 11, 1939 in Doddridge County, daughter of the late James Robert and Mildred Virginia Agnus Garrett Stout.
Edith graduated from Doddridge County High School and from Salem College. She was an elementary school teacher for twenty plus years. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church. Her hobbies were reading, working jigsaw puzzles, cross stitching, listening to music, singing, and working in her flowers.
Edith is survived by three daughters, Dianne Dotson and John, New Milton, Sarah Layfield and Terry, Sardis, Julie Todd and the late Richard “Rick”, Wallace; stepchildren, Robert Gene Hurst and Vicki, Fort Worth, TX, Laura Lee Hurst Nestor, New Milton; step son-in-law, Tommy Swiger, Salem; seven grandchildren, John Dotson II and Rebecca, Christina Barker and James, Steven Dotson and Jessica, Bryan Layfield and Devon, Melissa “Missy” Hinebaugh and Bobby, Richard “Richie” Todd II and Jessica, Alison Cumberledge and Coy; seventeen great grandchildren, Paige, Madelyn, Hannah, Caleb, Addie, Emmie, Ollie, Makenzie, Maliah, Jenna, Malorie, Preston, Denton, Perry, Paxton, Vance and Ellie; two great great grandchildren, Arielle and Asher; six step grandchildren, James Hurst, Jean Eakle, Jason Hurst, Jeffrey Hurst, Jeremy Swiger and Jordan Swiger; several step great grandchildren and step great great grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Jo Riffle, Circleville, OH, and Phyllis Ann Cottrill and James, Salem; numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents and son-in-law, Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Elwood Hurst on January 12, 2002; one grandson, Terry Layfield II, two great grandchildren, Ashby and Nate; step children, James Hurst, Joyce Ann Nazelrod, and Kay Swiger; siblings, Betty Jean Larson, James Edward Stout, John Albert Stout, Karl Robert Stout and Benjamin L Stout.
Family will receive friends at Davis Funeral Home - Salem, 1999 W. Main Street, Salem, on Monday, November 13, 2023 from 11:00 AM until the time of the Funeral Service at 1:00 PM with Rev Roger Fontaine officiating. Interment will follow at Salem IOOF Cemetery.
