Gertrude F. Compton, age 95, formerly of Rt.2 Salem passed away peacefully April 24, 2014 while residing at her daughter and son-in-law's home in Georgia.
She was born October 2, 1918 in Doddridge County, WV, the last surviving member of 10 children born to the late Paul Ford and Trixie June Seckman Currey.
On December 11, 1937, she was married to Warren F. Compton who preceded her in death on February 20, 2004. They enjoyed 67 beautiful years together.
Left to cherish her memories are two daughters, Frances G. Moorehead and husband, Glen (Bill) of Elberton, Georgia, Nancy J. Hindy and husband Raymond E. of Parkersburg, WV, two grandsons, James W. Brown, Ocean City, MS and Nathan Seth Hindy, Parkersburg WV, one great-great granddaughter, Kristina Rog and two great, great, great granddaughters Sarah and Emily Rog of Ocean City, MS and several nieces and nephews.
One grandson, Joseph R. McClain, five sisters, Genova G. Allen, Mary E. Pigott, Dorothy J. Hutson, Mildred R. Cork and Marie Flanigan and four brothers, David, Joseph, Thaddeus and John Currey preceded her in death.
Mrs. Compton retired from West Virginia Department of Welfare as a Social Worker after 25 years of service. She and late husband Warren enjoyed traveling extensively in the United States and Canada. She also enjoyed being a mother, wife and homemaker for her loving family. Her hobbies were reading and nature watching; she was an excellent carpenter and wood craftsman. The accomplishment of which she was most proud was the completion of the Granville Currey Family History. This was completed and printed in July 1999 with the assistance of Nina Davis Bond and Nancy Compton Hindy. The Granville Currey Family History covered 8 generations.
Funeral services will be conducted in the Harbert Funeral Home, 287 W. Main St., Salem on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 1PM with Pastor Don Flanigan presiding. Interment will follow in the K. of P. Memorial Park, Salem. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Sunday after 11AM until time of service.
