Ina Hickman Obituary

Ina Jennie Hickman, 88, of Salem, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Salem Center, surrounded by love. Born on November 2, 1936, in Hemlock, NY, Ina was the beloved daughter of the late Charles H. and Margaret Clara Humphrey Northrop.

Ina was a woman of deep faith, unwavering kindness, and boundless compassion. A graduate of Hemlock High School in Hemlock, NY, she dedicated her life to serving others and the Lord. As founder and last one that survived, Ina was a longtime secretary of the Mount Salem Revival Ground, Ina poured her heart into the ministry, especially the cherished summer camps that brought joy and spiritual growth to countless young lives. She was a devoted member of Mount Salem Baptist Church, where her presence, prayers, and dedication left a lasting mark on the community.

Ina had a lifelong love of horses and butterflies — symbols of beauty, strength, and transformation that mirrored her own spirit. She proudly rode in parades and showed quarter horses, earning numerous trophies and ribbons that spoke to her passion and perseverance. Music was also a part of her soul; she played the autoharp, trumpet, and organ with grace and joy.

A proud supporter of veterans, Ina was an active member of the VFW Women’s Auxiliary and participated in various veterans’ programs. She carried a heart full of gratitude and service, always placing others before herself.

Those who knew Ina will remember her for her warmth, gentleness, and generous spirit. She was the kind of person who lit up a room with her smile and made everyone feel like family.

She is survived by her stepchildren:  Peggy Sue Hostetler of Blanco, TX, John Hickman Jr. of Tampa, FL, Priscilla Ford of Longview, TX and their families; her loving siblings, Agnes Hink, Peggy Jones, Charles Northrop (Marjorie), Robert Northrop (Pamela), Steven Mingus, and Missi Peterson; along with many beloved nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Ina was welcomed into eternal rest by her beloved husband, John “Johnny” Hickman Sr., who preceded her in death on April 28, 2015. The two were united in marriage on March 16, 1961, and shared a life of love, faith, and commitment. She was also preceded in death by her sisters Hazel Brisbane (Art) and Helen Hess (Harold), and her brothers-in-law Chester Jones and Jim Hink.
