James Ray Cleavenger, 83, of Nutter St., Clarksburg passed away on Monday, May 4, 2009. He was born on May 7, 1925 in Clarksburg a son of the late Gilbert Dorsey Cleavenger and Vernia Mae Dunlap Cleavenger. On March 1, 1948 he married Nina Luree Summers Cleavenger who survives.
Also surviving are one daughter, Deanna Rae Cleavenger Bell and husband Larry, Bridgeport, two sons, James Ray Cleavenger, Jr. and wife Cathy, Edenton, NC, Stanley Wayne Cleavenger and wife Michelle, Chesapeake, VA, six grandchildren, Jessica Lauren Bell Gordon and husband Ryan, Lynchburg, VA, Kenan Nathaniel Bell, Lynchburg, VA, Elizabeth Austin Cleavenger Ligon and husband Colin, New Haven, CT, Grant James Cleavenger, Kirsten Luree Cleavenger, and Chase Ray Cleavenger, two great granddaughters, Violet Zada Gordon, Sophia Ryan Gordon, three step great grandchildren, Carlen Gordon, John Michael Gordon, Jerry Curtis Gordon, three brothers, Jack Richard Cleavenger, Portsmouth, AR, Walter Lee Cleavenger, Stewarts Draft, VA, Eugene Gilbert Cleavenger, Bridgeport, two sisters, Loveta G. Cleavenger Nutter, Clarksburg, Aletha Gay Cleavenger Southern, Clarksburg and several nieces and nephews. Two brothers, Edward Guy Cleavenger and William Bryan Cleavenger preceded him in death.
Mr. Cleavenger retired from Hinkle Brothers Inc. as a supervisor and the Harrison County Board of Education as a custodian. He was a veteran of WWII, serving in the United Stated Navy as an Aviation Machinist Mate Third Class. Mr. Cleavenger enjoyed watching sports events, especially basketball and working in his yard, then relaxing on his porch.
Funeral services will be held in the Chapel of Peace Mausoleum, Floral Hills Memorial Gardens, Quiet Dell on Saturday, May 9, 2009 at 12 Noon with Larry A. Bell presiding. Family and friends will be received in the mausoleum chapel on Saturday, May 9, 2009 from 10 AM until time of service.
