James Edward Hodges, 85, of Reedsville, passed away on Sunday, September 28, 2025 at Kingwood Healthcare Center. He was born on December 24, 1939 in Hinesville, GA, and grew up in Hilton Head, SC, a son of the late William A “Pat” and Evelyn (Salter) Hodges.
James is survived by his wife of 13 years, Phyllis A Hodges.
James is also survived by one son, Ricky L. Watson of Salem; grandchildren: Rusty Nicholson and wife Christy, Jeremy Watson and wife Barbie, and Katrina See and husband John; great-grandchildren, Austin, Tyler, RJ, Olivia, Sophia, Hadley, Reese, Teague, Wyatt, Grace, Josh and Caleb; and many great great-grandchildren; siblings, Grace Rhodes of Dana, NC and his sister-in-law, Ella of Dana, NC.
In addition to his parents, James is preceded in death by his first wife, Lenita Pearl Hodges; daughter, Pam Underwood and son-in-law, Carson Underwood; sister, Barbara Lynn; brother, Dennis Hodges; daughter-in-law, Jan Watson; granddaughters, Laura Beth Watson and Jennifer Marie Watson.
James served his country in the United States Air Force where he retired after 21 years of service. After the service he worked for the United States Postal Service for Harrisville. He was a member of the Vermont Baptist Church, where he was a dedicated Christian and Deacon who led many people to Christ. He was also a member of the VFW 9151 Salem, Air Force Sergeants Associations, Red Horse Squadron and the Rural Carries Union. He will be remembered as a man who truly appreciated the beauty of the world around him. He loved the outdoors, whether it was casting a line while fishing, traveling to new places, or simply enjoying nature’s quiet wonders. His heart was happiest when spending time with his family, sharing laughter, and creating memories together. A devoted animal lover, he cared for all pets and found joy in their companionship. He also had a deep appreciation for art and enjoyed collecting pieces from his travels that reflected his eye for beauty. Beyond his interests, what defined him most was his character as he was kind-hearted, loving, generous, and wise. He touched the lives of those around him with warmth and compassion, and his presence will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

Family and friends will be received at Davis Funeral Home, Salem on Wednesday, October 1, 2025 from 3-7 pm and on Thursday, October 2, 2025 from 9:00 am until the time of the funeral at 11:00 AM with Reverend Chad Ash officiating.
