A dedicated family man, James “Jim” Arthur Shaver of the St Clara Community in Doddridge County, passed on to his heavenly home on January 11, 2026, following a battle with cancer. After multiple hospitalizations in 2025, he was able to stay at home starting in mid-December with the loving care of his wife and children, WVU home health support and near the end, hospice care.
He married his wife of 62 years, Mary Ann (Powell) Shaver, on June 27, 1963, and he raised three children on his little dream farm in Doddridge County. He always said she was the joy of his life and he loved her dearly. Their marriage modeled true sacrificial love to all who knew them. He had many careers in his life starting with painting houses, laying carpet and later welding. He traveled all over the USA welding on pipelines and he always made friends wherever he traveled. When possible his loving wife traveled with him. After retiring as a pipeline welder he became nationally certified as a welding inspector, his final job for several years before staying retired.
He loved sports and during his youth he played basketball for Bristol High School and baseball in the Clarksburg area. Later, his favorite pastime during his early adult years was to play fast pitch softball where he made many life long friends and was a well respected pitcher. His faith in God and love of family was very important to him and he instilled these values in his three children and later in their extended families. He also lived by the motto “if you take home a paycheck you better have earned it!” He believed in work ethic and he modeled hard work every day. He survived a cave in on the pipeline as well as an explosion; he always returned to work even when his body wasn’t feeling well.
His pastime joy was to take his bass boat out fishing. He spent many hours on the lake with his late brother Bob Shaver, his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and his buddy Ralph Lacy. If he wasn’t fishing, he could be found working on projects in his garage or out on the farm in his sxs.
Jim was born in Harrison County on March 26, 1944 and spent most of his youth in the Jarvisville Community. He was the son of Harold Franklin Shaver and Geraldine “Gerry” Dyer (McIntyre) Shaver. He was preceded in death by his brother Robert “Bob” Shaver and sister in law Clarice Shaver and his sister Judith McIntyre Shaver. He recalled that some of his best memories were from the farm of his Uncle Buck and Aunt Helen (Carder) McIntyre. His family was often called the Waltons because they always navigated to their home for Sunday dinners and of course hunting season. He is survived by his children Sally Ann Hinterer (Phillip), Patrick Shaver (Kristi Pierce), and Scott Shaver (Carrie). He loved his grandchildren Dakota Hinterer, Levi Hinterer (Shelby), Sydney Walls (Justin) and Kesley Myers (Kyle). He was excited to live to see his great grandchildren (all boys!): Bentley Walls, Tripp Hinterer, Axton Myers, Mason Myers and Boone Hinterer.
Jim was such a shepherd, he often claimed the neighborhood kids, and certainly the kids who married into the family, as his own and he would do anything for anybody. Jim modeled how to live and how to die. He told everyone that he was confident in his faith and he knew Jesus would welcome him home. The family wants to thank everyone for the kind comments of love and support thru visits, Facebook, text messages and phone calls. Jim especially enjoyed the visits of his dear friends, Jim Barr, Ralph Lacy, and Paul Herrod. The love of family and friends, along with faith in God, sustained them. The family will have a private memorial at a later date as they honor his wishes to be cremated. If anyone wishes to honor his memory he would tell them to hug those you love more often and take time to do what you enjoy with those who mean the most to you. Life is precious and sometimes short- cherish every moment.
The family would also like to thank Davis Funeral Home of Salem for their respect and care of Jim’s final wishes.
