Mark Matheny Obituary

Mark Alan Matheny, 69, of Salem, passed away peacefully at his home on Monday, January 19, 2026, surrounded by the love that defined his life. His passing leaves a profound silence in the hearts of his family and friends—much like a song ending too soon, yet echoing long after the final note.

Born on December 16, 1956, in Clarksburg, West Virginia, Mark was the beloved son of the late Harry Edward and Georgia Mae Stewart Matheny. From an early age, he carried a gentle spirit, a steady strength, and a deep love for both family and music—two constants that shaped who he was.

Mark was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather whose greatest joy came from time spent with those he loved. He is survived by his cherished wife, Debra “Debbie” Robinson Matheny, his partner in life and in every season. He also leaves behind his children, Julie Dye and her husband Rodney of Doddridge County, and Jacob Scott Matheny of Westover; his grandchildren, Abigail Thompson (Cody Fultineer) and Dayton Lipscomb; and his precious great-grandchildren, Brantley James Fultineer and Jaxon Edison Fultineer, who were truly the light of his life.

He is also survived by his siblings: David Matheny and wife Patty Lee of Salem, Patty Davis and husband Mike of Marietta, OH, twin Martha McConnell and the late Danny of West Union, and Eric Matheny of Center Point, West Virginia; along with several nieces and nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and one great-great-nephew, all of whom he loved dearly.

Mark was a proud graduate of Doddridge County High School, Class of 1975 and he retired from Hall Drilling LLC, where he spent many proud years as a truck driver, known for his strong work ethic and reliability. To other truckers, he was known as “Handsome Daddy,” a handle that reflected both his playful humor and the deep affection he inspired and in earlier years by the well-known nickname “Tobacco Chewer,”

Music was the heartbeat of Mark’s life. A lifelong musician, he was gifted on both the electric and upright bass and played with numerous local music groups throughout the years. His passion spanned many genres—bluegrass, gospel, classic rock, and more—each one carrying pieces of his soul. Whether on stage, at a gathering, or simply playing for family, Mark’s music brought people together and told stories words alone could not. His love for hunting, painting, drag racing, camping, and above all, family time, filled his days with joy and purpose.
