Richard H. Dick Harkins, 82, of the WV Veterans Nursing home, Clarksburg and formerly of Randolph St., Salem departed this life on Thursday, November 26, 2009 in the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Medical Center, Clarksburg.
He was born on April 21, 1927 in Moggiffin County, KY a son of the late Lawrence and Marie Vance Harkins. On May 26, 2007 his wife Theodosia Dosie Lowe Harkins preceded him on death.
Surviving are one daughter Reva Carder and husband Jeff, Salem, one step daughter, Venita Mundy and husband Doug, Omaha, NE, two grandsons, Jeffery K. Carder II, Richard D. Carder, both of West Union and one step grandson, Michael Mundy, Omaha, NE. His stepfather Carson L. Lough preceded him in death.
Mr. Harkins was a U. S. Navy veteran serving in WW II. He was awarded the European, Pacific, Philippine and American Theater Ribbons and the Victory Medal. Dick was a lifetime member of VFW Post 9151 and American Legion Post 68.
He was a former employee of Kelly Welding Company as a welder and he worked on several pipeline jobs as a welder. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, December 7, 2009 at 1:00 PM in the West Virginia National Cemetery, Pruntytown. Full Military Honors will be accorded.
