Russell Fay McClung, 82, of Salem passed away on Thursday, April 10, 2025 at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center. He was born on October 2, 1942 in Clarksburg, son of the late Lymon Fay and Hazel Pearl Furbee McClung.
Russell graduated from Salem High School, Class of 1960. He served his country twenty-two years in the United States Army serving two tours in Vietnam and retired in 1982. He then worked in the parts department for Harry Green Chevrolet for fifteen plus years. Russell was a wonderful grandfather who loved spoiling his grandchildren. You could find Russell either playing golf, getting his tool box to fix things, watching westerns or college softball on the television. One of Russell’s proudest moments was on the little league field, coaching his children. He not only taught them how to hit a curveball, but also how to lose with grace and how to win with humility, both on and off the field.
Russell is survived by one daughter, Rusanna Ashcraft and husband Michael, Salem; one son, Charles “Bud” McClung and fiancée Micki Mardos, Salem; six grandchildren, Chase McClung, Krista Luft and husband Andrew, Melyssa Pickford and husband Tyler, Rebekah Travis, Daniel McClung, and Joshua Ashcraft; five great-grandchildren, Cheyanne McClung, Charlie McClung, Ariel McClung, Autumn Travis, and Deacon Luft; one brother, Robert McClung, Salem; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Russell is preceded in death by his wife, Charlotte L. Glaspell McClung on April 3, 2013; one daughter, Melissa Sue McClung; two brothers, Richard and Randall McClung.
