Willis “Willie” Lee Matthey 94, of Salem, passed away at home on Saturday, April 27, 2024. He was born on March 26, 1930, in Salem, a son of the late Cecil Ingram Matthey and Pearl Robinson Matthey Wallace. Willie was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years, Lola June Wilson Matthey on October 14, 2005
Willie is survived by two sons, Wilson L. “Billy” Matthey and wife Angelia of Deerwalk, WV, and Dennis Matthey and wife Pamela of Salem; one daughter, June M. Fahey and husband Michael of Salem; seven grandchildren, Adam “Josey”, Lacey, Mindy (Benjamin), Heather, Katie, Grace and Jacob; ten great grandchildren, Lucy, Liam, Braden, Izzy, Koen, Kai, Kora, Dalton (Madison), Kaylee, and Eli; two great great grandchildren, Emma and Holden; several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents and wife, Willie was preceded in death by a grandson, Jerod Lee Matthey; a sister, Deloris Ford.
Willie attended Salem High School and served his country in the United States Navy. He was a retired coalminer with thirty years of service for Clinchfield Coal, Dola Mines. Willie attended Salem Church of Christ. He enjoyed farming, fishing and hunting. The family would like to thank the caregivers, April Whitehair, April Summers, Robin Rush, Kayla Bonnell, Doris Merlott and Stephanie Stout for their outstanding care which allowed Dad to remain in his home.
Family and friends will meet at Davis Funeral Home in Salem on Tuesday, April 30, 2024 from 3-7PM and on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 from 9:00 AM until the time of the Funeral Service at 11:00AM with Pastor Kevin Lough officiating. Interment will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens where full military honors will be accorded by the Harrison County Honor Guard and the US Navy Honor Guard.
