Winona Mathews Obituary

Winona L. Mathews, 78 of Long Run Rd. Salem departed this life on Monday, December 16, 2013 in the United Hospital Center, Bridgeport.

She was born in Smithburg on June 14, 1935, a daughter of the late Harry and Thelma Ware Simpson. On January 17, 1953 she married Thomas Richard Mathews who preceded her in death on October 12, 1989.



Surviving is five daughters, Judith Ann Davisson and husband, Brice, of Salem, Corlis Boyce and husband, Jerrold, of Bristol, Monica Mathews of Nutter Fort, Melinda Mathews of Port St. Lucy, FL and Emily "Zippy" Crouser and husband, Willie, of Salem; two sons, Terry Lynn "Barney" Mathews and wife, Dorothy, of West Union and Mathew Mathews and fianc, Erin Minor, of Salem; eight grandchildren, Thomas Richard Mathews II, Terry Lynn Mathews Jr. Larry Jay Brewer, Michelle Ilene Lowdermilk, Jonathan Michael Davisson, Brianna Shaye Crouser, Kirstein Minor and Chandler Odel; and six great-grandchildren.

One daughter, Janice Lee Mathews; one sister, Lila Burnside; and two half sisters, Helen Eddy and Dick Moore preceded her in death.

Mrs. Mathews was co-owner/operator of Mountain Acre Farms and T.R. Mathews General Store and had worked for NBC Outlet. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be sadly missed by her family and friends.

Funeral services will be conducted in the Harbert Funeral Home, 287 W. Main St., Salem on Sunday, December 22, 2013 at 1:00PM with Pastor Denver Burnside presiding. Interment will follow in the Mt. Olive Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends in the funeral home chapel on Saturday, December 21, 2013 from 2-8PM and after 11AM on Sunday until time of services.
